Some thing's to study when detecting: Most people think when they buy a metal detector; they will instantly find mountains of gold and become wealthy. This just isn't true. Metal detecting is a hobby and requires a lot of patience, determination and most of all, the love of the Australian bush. Rare-earth (neodymium) magnets for metal junk, place on end of pick.
• Puddlers. • Narrow deep mine shafts. Tailings contain gold as the old timers left a lot of the smaller stuff behind. Concentrate on the lower tailings • Small shallow holes. • Turned over gully beds. concentrate on the edges of these workings as a lot of small gold was left behind here. • Ironbark Trees. Gold bearing regions in Australia are littered with ironbark forests. Look for forests of ironbark with trees all the same size as the old timers burnt these forests to help them prospect the area. • Gold veins and deep leads. It is not known why but gold veins generally run from north to south and the gold usually sheds down the western side of a gold bearing hill. • Exposed bedrock. Try to detect in ground that seems to be close to bedrock surface. Deep soil is usually a waste of time unless there is a clay layer,Swing Low & Slow. • Fault lines. Usually gold occurs near fault lines. Go to your Dept. primary industries center or website • Geometry. Quartz, ironstone and schist’s • Goggle earth- you need it
