Hi all, im new to prospecting and really glad I found this forum Would really love to opportunity to meet up with some like minded folks who can show a new fella a thing or 2. Located in Hobart but am formerly a 'northner. My grandfather had a gold mine at Lisle for many years and I think the stories and gold he showed me as a child have somehow turned into gold fever! So far my only treasures are some killikrankie diamonds I panned up at the tailings of Mt Tanner tin mine on Flinders. Cant wait to get out and have a look for gold though! Cheers

Thanks Starry I will keep an eye out for upcoming trips.
If you could give us a few pointers for new prospectors that would be fantastic too. I will go and get my prospecting permit soon, I dont want to end up doing anything illegally. I have read the info on the MRT website and found the rules againt dredges and sluices a bit suprising? Can anyone expand on those points?
Also what is a good kit for a beginner like me? I have a set of sieves and a gold pan, a pick and a spade. I like the idea of metal detecting too so would be interested to see one in action.

the use of dredges yes illegal all over OZ , as for sluices am speaking with MRT at the moment as I have had verbal approval for small 3 foot sluices just waiting to get reply in writing so it stands up if questioned in the field , will be posting up some more video,s shortly on panning etc

G'day Ratters,
Welcome to the fold, and if your grandad is still about, glean some more info off him about the Lisle, if not for yourself, then for me. Good lord, with all the info I already have about the place as well as personal experience, one would think I had enough, but alas, one can never have enough.
As Starry already mentioned, he has put up a post to click on which takes you to Youtube and starts a video on Gold panning. I have added another link which takes you to a Gold panning video, also on Youtube. Just click on the link and it will take you to the place and the video. Cheers, Cashman.

Hey Cashman, unfortunately the old fella isnt around anymore, but my mother knows where the old mine was, because she spent every weekend of her childhood on it! One day I should get her to take me out for a look, although i believe its rather overgrown now and doesnt look much like it used to. They did do alright out of it I think but more from lots of hard work over many years than striking rich ground. I would pretty much consider myself an armchair expert now on panning and sluicing with all the youtube videos I have watched lately! Just need to get out and put it into practise
